"La Bella Vita" is a written and visual journey about all the things that I consider beautiful in my life and that I love to share and converse about with other like-minded and like-hearted souls. Too often we are in such a hurry "doing" things in life, that we fail to stop and actually "see" and "experience" the awesome beauty of God around us, where we can see Him and listen to Him in quiet contemplation. Sometimes this beauty can be grand and magnificent, while at other times, beauty is something of pure simplicity. This space is a place for me to retreat my mind, heart, and soul in order to reflect on God's goodness in the things He has blessed me with and has given me a passion for in my life.
.
But even more specifically, the philosophy underlying the creation of this blog resulted from possessing a desire to live the rest of my life more fully, passionately, soulfully, purposefully, and with a stronger connection to and in celebration of the riches of the zestful Italian way of life. In particular, I wanted to chronicle my journey of living a more simple life where I can engage in and practice the centuries-old, yet humble Italian artisanal traditions and rituals of living more in harmony with the earth and its seasons . . . through my gardens, and into my cucina (kitchen) and ultimately to the tavola (table) . . . the heart and hearth of Italian life. I desired to live deliberately as my ancestors lived and not on a frenetic American treadmill speed, unconscious of what is flying by in life. Additionally, this way of life evokes a greater appreciation for the quiet beauty of my quilting and stitching as well as the beauty of my animal companions on the acreage, for Italians are the masters of fabric and lovers of animals.
.
Italians have a unique sensibility to live a higher quality of life, in that they savor every moment of life with an intensity, yet pure simplicity and creativity unlike others. Beauty is treasured, whether found in nature, during humble daily rituals, in slowing down and surrendering to the day while savoring delectable and nourishing food that soothes our souls and restores our spirits. This same comforting food is shared by Italians with precious loved ones who surround and warm us with thoughtful conversations.
.
To partake in the aged tradition and art of living the beautiful life is quintessentially Italian. All of my gardens, whether floral or vegetable, are grown by my husband and myself, organically and with great reverence to the earth, resulting in fresh, tasteful, clean produce and flowers that enhance our lives physically, soulfully, and emotionally, as well as healing our souls. From our high quality home garden-grown produce on our small acreage, I make all of my recipes from scratch in honor of the ancient Italian tradition of embracing and celebrating the beautiful art of food.
.
"La Bella Vita -- Because Life is Beautiful and Delicious" is a celebration of my Italian-American life. It is with great affection that I honor this heritage in which not only the beauty of food provides daily sustenance for my soul and spirit, but all of God's beauty gracing my surroundings lifts me up to live life more gloriously.
.
Welcome to my beautiful and delicious journey, of which I hope that one can gain inspiration for living. Let's savor life together!
My family is from the mountains immediately north of the city of Modena, in the provence of Emilia-Romagna, in Northern Italy, located on the map below in red:
Culinary Specialities Unique to Emilia-Romagna, Italy:
Parmigiano Reggiano!
Tortellini!
Bolognese Sauce!
Balsamico Aceto (Balsamic Vinegar)!
Prosciutto di Parma!
These culinary contributions of my native Italian region underscore Emilia-Romagna's fame as the gastronomic heartland of Italy that has earned the highest respect in Italian cuisine! Italians of E-R are passionate and dedicated to the artisanal production of prosciutto, balsamico vinegar, and others listed above that have no rivals.

Hi Roz,
ReplyDeleteI read your post yesterday morning about Cooking Light and continuing with a healthy lifestyle. The Cooking Light Virtual Supper Club is looking for a new member and after reading your post it made me think of you twice:D
We were hoping that you might be interested in joining our group every first Wednesday of the month as a regular member. We keep in contact with each other each month planning a menu that we feel will work together.
Please don't feel obligate by any means. We would only want you to join if it is something you would really like to do. If you feel the time commitment would not fit into your blogging schedule perhaps you would consider joining us randomly as a guest blogger at our virtual table or joining with the Linky Tool.
Hugs,
Valerie

My grandfathers mother and father came from Italy while her mothers parents were born in America (I'm not sure where someone immigrated over). They are from Sicily and I believe Parma. I love the heritage and wish I knew more.
ReplyDeleteRoz,
ReplyDeleteI have been reading the articles and recipes on your blog... they're great!
In fact, I’ve been reading blogs from every country on this planet looking for writers that would make great contributors for an online magazine my daughter and I are developing. I like what you write about. We could help each other.
My name is Patrick McCormick and our magazine is called “The e-Buffet”. Our prototype is online now. I hope you will take a look at it. It’s only been a month and we have assembled a remarkable group of talented artists and writers. It has become a Creative Collaboration and we are growing stronger every day.
There are several excellent reasons for our early success recruiting this talent. First, it is a great opportunity to promote your own blog or website. Second we do not charge our contributors or make them work for free, we actually intend to pay them. The creators of The e-Buffet will take ten percent of the total gross revenue each month and place it into a pool to be split by the contributors. Admittedly, we are a start-up business and do not have deep pockets, so the pool will be small at first. However, with the type of artists we are attracting, I predict our readership will grow quickly.
So, I like your work and I offer you the same opportunity that I have given the others. If you get in touch with me now, you can still place some of your material in the first issue due out June 1, 2011. Oh, the first few months you can submit articles and photographs that have all ready been published elsewhere. I believe that makes this one of those “Win, Win” opportunities.
I hope to hear from you soon,
Patrick McCormick

Hi Roz, you're the only one I can count on. Do you have a recipe for authentic, "Italian Wedding Soup"? Years ago we used to go to this small Italian restaurant (it has closed since) and that was my favorite item to order. It had tiny round noodles (not cous-cous), small meatballs and I think some spinach. It was soooo savory and it makes me sad that I may never get to enjoy it again....unless you can help??? Please say you do have it :) Thx!!
ReplyDeleteWhat a fantastic site....I am happy to follow you and I look forward to each and every post. Your "about me" page is absolutely lovely....
ReplyDeleteI don't see a "subscribe by email" option on your blog. I would love to keep up with it by email. Congrats on the beautiful blog.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad to have found your site. My life philosophy is very similar to yours and was shaped by the Italians, especially my grandparents, that I grew up around. I will be following your blog with great pleasure and comfort.
ReplyDeleteI am unable to reply direct to your lovely message on News From Italy and can not find an email address so responding here. I live near Viterbo which is about two hours north of Roma, if you have transport when you are here with your parents we may well be able to meet up if our schedules allow. What fun that would be! I was amazed to learn it is your first trip as you are so passionate in your blog about all things Italian. You must be so excited.
ReplyDeleteUn abbraccio, buona serata Daniela.
Oh mio Dio (goodness), Daniela!
Rosalinda
In English:
Oh my goodness, Daniela! What an honor for you to propose such an offer to meet! We (my parents and I) will be visiting Venice on Monday, the 8th of October. Our plane arrives in Bologna Sunday night, very late, and so we will stay in a hotel there and leave early in the morning for Venice. Monday night we will stay in Padua after a full day in Venice. Then we will stay for several days in Modena and Montecreto with my family. My grandparents are the only members of my family that left Italy in 1910. So my family in America is very, very small. I have met my Italian relatives when they have visited here, but this is my first time to Italy and I am so very excited that it is hard to explain. I have waited all of my 57 years of life to visit my native homeland. I will be in tears of joy!
Baci to my Venetian friend,
Rosalinda
