This morning's post on SITS (see lower sidebar for button), the discussion was on "Commenting" on each other's blogs.
Now I know that each of us has our favorite blogs that we like to read quite on a regular basis (through our readers or otherwise). But I believe that as a friend, that whenever someone has the courtesy and takes the time to leave me a comment, that I will return to his/her blog directly to comment on . . . and to see what's new with that blogging friend, etc.
Your comments to me come through to my e-mail inbox as well, so I have a FOLDER called: ANSWER BLOG COMMENTS that I file them in. I re-read your comments and then click on your blog so that I can answer you directly. Once I've done that, I file your comment under my AMICI folder (which means "friends" in Italian). And that's how I know that I've gotten back to you. If a person does not have a blog, I reply to them directly through an e-mail message.
You know how frustrated you get when people don't return phone calls or e-mails? They say that when people do that, it is basically a sign of disrespect and lack of concern for your feelings. I couldn't agree more.
I don't leave a comment back to anyone on my own posts because there is no guarantee that the person who commented can read my reply. I did that at first, but not anymore. Once again, I think it's simply an issue of "reciprocity". . . you know, like when we borrow a cup of sugar from a neighbor, we certainly want to return the favor!
So that's what I do. I also try to say something meaningful to me that's related to the blogger's post and not just a give a simple notion of "nice post", which isn't as meaningful for sure.
OK now, I hope that you write back and let me know what you do. After all, you are my blogging friends and each of us are developing a community of like-minded blogging friends. So I'm looking forward to hearing what you say. . . plus, come to think of it, I think I'll post your thoughts after a couple of days to wait for everyone!!! Pin It

Hey Roz, I read all the new posts through Google reader. I comment on posts when I have something to say, whether that person commented on my latest post or not. And I do try to reciprocate as well for blogs I don't follow. I think it's really style of writing prompts more comments and followers. I enjoy reading your posts and can relate to them so I almost always leave a comment. Have a great weekend!
ReplyDeleteI full agree with you , Bella .
ReplyDeleteA meaningful comment is really important for us because when we write a post we give or try to give the best of us with the real intention of sharing our thoughts , even the simple ones ... That's why every Friday I write a post labeled " thanks " .
Have a marvelous weekend and God bless your family :D
What a great idea to talk about comments on postings. I do much the same thing as you do. I'm a southerner and I try my best to display my best manners and always say thank you. I don't respond directly on my own blog either for the same reason you stated - they probably won't see it.
ReplyDeleteI always try my best to return and make comments on others blog who comment on mine, just as you describe.
I love to visit other's blogs and leave what I consider a thoughtful comment and always try to read what they wrote. I'm not fond of "nice post" either.
Happy Pink Saturday and have a great weekend. The sun is out here (finally) and it's a beautiful fall day in the mountains. I'll be checking back to see others input on this very interesting subject.
Sam
Hi Roz,
ReplyDeleteI feel exactly the same way since I first starting blogging almost a year ago. It just does not seem right not to answer someone if they leave me a comment. Besides isn't this why we all blog anyway? To interact with each other. Sometimes I get the feeling some bloggers have different reasons for blogging though. Sigh...I don't understand them myself. I enjoy talking and chatting online...alot. *Smiles* :)
Have a wonderful weekend my friend. ~Melissa :)
Aloha Roz:
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this blog post. It answered one question I had...why the email response instead of a response back in the combox. It makes so much sense.
I used to comment on just about all my blog visits because I felt it the polite thing to do. Now, I have so many blog favorites that it would take my whole day to leave a comment.
I do respond to each and every comment that folks leave on my blog because again, I feel it is the polite thing to do and especially because they took the time to actually stop by and comment. Nowadays, it may take a day or two...sometimes longer to respond. But I still do.
Roz, I do agree with you. When I first started blogging in April, it was easy to comment on others and respond simply because I didn't have too many blogs I was following or knew about and would leap for joy if I received one comment on my own blog. After discovering foodbuzz and the thousands of foodblogs out there, it does get difficult timewise, to leave comments and answer each individual back. With work, kids and a house to keep up, I try to scrimp as many minutes as I can to visit my favorites. I do like your thoughts on answering back personally. I've been answering on my own blog which I should have realized that many people don't get back to it. I like Melissa love chatting online and friending people on facebook where I can have better conversations. I have been so happy to meet so many people from around the world, just like me, living, raising families and pressing for goals. I still want that acreage and Jersey cow, lol!! Besos Amiga!!
ReplyDeleteI have about 80 people on my blogroll, that I visit everyday or almost every day that they post. My blogroll is filled with people I am closest to and people who have consistantly visited for a period of time.
ReplyDeleteFor the people not on my blogroll, I keep a note of where I left off in my posts, and visit them all. I do this about every 2-3 three days.
Visiting takes a lot of time, I am not very fast and spend about 2 hours a day visiting and commenting. I take at least one day off a week.
I don't care for generic comments and try to refer to something specific about that person's post.
One last thing, I always smile when I comment. I noticed that a little while ago and hope it comes through when I write. :)
I try my best to do the same as you've mentioned here. There are times when I comment on my own blog. For instance, when someone asks a question in comments, I'll answer. That way, even if the commenter doesn't come back for the answer, anyone who may have the same question later can see the answer.
ReplyDeleteRoz, of course you can post my comment, thanks! I have a 'subscribe to' area in the left column on my site. If you use the pull-down menu under that, Google Read is the first option. Thanks for visiting today!
ReplyDeleteoh i try and respond to all comments as well and visit the other blog, you are very organized wow
ReplyDeleteWow Roz, you're very organized in this aspect and I am impressed. I also read every single comment and I always try my best to reply promptly, unless I'm so tied up by work.
ReplyDeletenice post!
ReplyDeleteHa ha! Just kidding :-)
ReplyDeleteI try to respond to questions to the person who asked them directly. However I get a lot of anonymous readers asking questions so I leave them on my blog in the comment section. Sometimes I'll respond on their blogs if they don't have an email address. I don't always have the time to respond right away, but I usually do it withing a couple of days.
I'm not quite as organized as you with respond to comments but I have a special blog email that I use to categorize everyone. If you email me more than twice then you get your own file :-)
Hi Roz, I hope you're a having a beautiful weekend.
ReplyDeleteHere's what I do. Since I spend most of my day working at my computer, I check my blogroll several times a day, and every time I see one of the bloggers I follow has published something new, I go and visit. If I really like what I read and see, I leave a comment and I actually go back after a day or two to see if that person answered me, or I click on follow-up comments in my mail box.
Most people on whose blogs I comment are the ones that visit my blog regularly, so I answer them on my blog, as I know they will probably see my answer. Only with people who visit my blog for the first time or not on regular. basis, I go immediately and check and comment on their blog.
Unfortunately, sometimes I don't have time to comment, promise myself to come back and then forget. I know that's not very nice.
Sometimes I try to get my readers involved asking a question, and since most people don't answer my question, I wonder if they've really read the post, or just written "nice post" and went on.
That would make me really sad.
Hi Roz,
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog, I'm so glad you like the little pumpkin counter!
I have to say I really struggle with the comment thing. I have 3 blogs, 2 that are very active. One of them I post every day on, and on another I post at least twice a week. I get quite a few comments each day and numerous emails. The blog posts take up a lot of my time, as I have a lot of work and time involved in either cleaning up graphics or creating new ones. Although I would love to respond to all of the comments, it's just not possible time wise. I know some people that have blogs that are so high traffic, that they just turn the comments off altogether so that their readers won't be hurt by them not responding. I would hate to do that, as it's important for me to get feedback from my readers. I hope I haven't hurt peoples feelings by not responding to their comments, but after reading these comments here, it sounds like I probably have. :(
I totally agree with commenting back, even if it's a few days later, better late than never. It's just common courtesy and we all like to hear things back anyway, so comments are usually a good thing!

I've been so far behind in reading my favorite blogs, so I missed this posting. It's a great topic! I also try my best to leave a comment. If I have a new visitor, I try to pop into their blog and visit them and say hello and thanks for posting. It's frustrating, though, when someone leaves a nice comment and it's either anonymous or they don't have an email or a blog. I leave a thanks on my blog, hoping that they might return.
ReplyDeleteYou are truly one of the friendliest bloggers that I know.
And...we both love horses!
Thanks for these comments. They are much like I try to follow. I'm not always 100% unfortunately; sometimes life gets in the way of my blogging. I think that is okay because I know it happens to others as well. I love to visit many blogs and will always try to leave a comment whenever I can make a personal connection to what is being said. Like you, I think it the mannerly thing to do. I've enjoy reading some of your posts and hope to be back to visit again. I host a weekly blog event called Crock Pot Wednesday if you are interested. It's been fun to meet new friends through it. Thanks again.
ReplyDeleteGood tips. I am still new. Thanks for sharing. I'll be following you...
